Great news reached us from Scotland where the short film REFUGE won Best Cinematography and Best Director award for myself and Leticia Agudo. We are very happy about the news and thank everyone at the Scottish Independent Film Festival for the honour.

When Glen Hansard enlisted the help of his fans around the globe to create the official video for "Wreckless Heart" I answered a post by Eoin Wickham, a film director, who looked for a DOP to help him film his idea for the music video.

Everyone involved in making it with us was very happy when it was picked as the winning entry.

"Thank you so much to everyone who submitted an entry for the “Wreckless Heart” video s...

Leticia Agudo of Whackala, a film production company, was picked to take part in this year's ARRI Alexa Take, made possible by The Screen Directors Guild Ireland. They have teamed up with Arri Alexa cameras and Teach Solais lighting to provide a new resource for directors who would like to make a short film, trailer or music video, and make this package available to them for 3 days.

Leticia's prologue "Schooling" was f...

Women in predominantly male professions? What's that about?

When my wonderful friend Beta, a photographer, took my portrait doing what I love most and put it in a self-published book full of portraits of women working jobs mostly associated with men - I knew she tapped into a something big. The issue of gender equality has been swirling around us for a while now. Citizens, organisations and companies began pointing out the vast...

REFUGE on which I worked as the DOP is heading to festivals in the USA.

"The short film “Refuge” shot in the director’s native city of Seville will be screening at the Chicago Irish Film Festival and Capital Irish Film festival in Washington DC this March. The short tells the story of a young man from Ireland who, lost and alone in Seville, gets help and refuge from an undocumented immigrant. For one night, the two men are equals...

It's always good news to find out that a film I worked on has been selected to screen in festivals. For QED, a human rights short film, it's been a string of festivals at home (Ireland) and abroad. And then, when a film I worked on is recognised and awarded, the news is that much happier. I was very happy to hear that QED picked up the Jury Award for "Best Overall Short Film" at Santa Fe International Film Festival 2018. Congrat...

REFUGE, the short film, has a new shiny trailer. Give it a gander:

A particularly juicy opportunity has come my way and I am here to tell you about it. A few months ago I was asked to join the production of Czech version of a popular TV reality show known as the Survivor. I went to the Philippines for 6 weeks where I worked as a camera operator on 32 episodes of the show. When all was done and finished I couldn't quite grasp the fact that the hard work has come to an end. Together with my fello...

Short film formerly known as Breathe, directed by Amy-Joyce Hastings, starring Michael O'Kelly and Donna Anita Nikolaisen, has a new name - QED. I wrote about my work on this short film a while ago and am happy to announce that QED is going to have it's world premiere today at the Galway Film Fleadh. Special shout out to Amy-Joyce, who has brought the film to completion. Here is the teaser trailer, and I hope you'll get to see i...

I'm very happy that the good people at Filmbase have approached me about teaching there. I am currently scheduled to deliver several DSLR courses, as well as camera and lighting classes. I share with my students everything I know about filmmaking in connection to the art of cinematography in particular.

A few days ago I wrapped on a short film "Breathe" produced in conjunction with the Filmbase Master in Production program. Students had a chance to experience a real set and see first hand how a professional shoot is run. Director Amy-Joyce Hastings took on a script which handles a serious turning point in the lives of a young married couple living the perfect life, portrayed by Michael O'Kelly and Donna Anita Nikolaisen

Mike Foott's musical comedy The Donor turned three nominations out of twelve into awards at the 7th Underground Cinema Festival in Dún Laoghaire during the weekend.

Best screenplay, supporting actress and cinematography. Mike, Majella and I were there to accept the trophies. Overall it was a fun night and we are honoured our work was recognised among many other brilliant short films.

Yesterday, I returned from Seville where I spent seven days with the team behind Dublin based production company Whackala, shooting their new short fiction film Refuge. Director Leticia Agudo - native to Seville - did a pre-scout of the locations a while ago. Together with her team mates Paul McGrath and Bobby Moloney we solidified those locations and shot some test footage first before our talent arrived. He was none other than...

For the first few days in October I teamed up with a young up-and-coming director David Ryan to film his first short film out of college named Ripple. It tells a story of a father who has to face the consequences of his choices when his son goes missing.

The film stars Fair City's own Geoff Minogue as Ross/father, a newcomer Finn Majury as Conor/son, and actress Eilish Rafferty as Kate/mother. You will also see David's dog K...

Sometimes I pick up my camera and use it to capture still images. I was challenged to create head shot portfolio for a model/actor Evan Brady. It turned out to be a very creative and pleasant experience. 3 hours in the city centre of Dublin, three different locations - here is a sneak peek.
